Big Red Weekend Recap:
It was a basketball weekend for the Big Red as the girls hosted St. Paul on Friday night and the boys played host to Crestview on Saturday night. The Lady Big Red celebrated senior night on Friday night while hosting the Flyers in their final home regular season game of the season. After a convincing loss to the Flyers the first time around earlier in the season the Lady Big Red came out playing hard and determined to send their seniors out on a positive note. It was a defensive battle all night as both teams really struggled shooting. St. Paul jumped out to an early lead and would lead the entire game but never by more than a few possessions as the Lady Big Red stayed within striking distance. St. Paul held a 5 point lead at halftime before extending that lead slightly throughout the 3rd quarter. The Lady Big Red would cut the deficit down to 3 points at one point in the 4th quarter but could not get any closer than that as they would go on to lose by a final score of 34-27. The loss drops them to 2-18 overall on the season and 1-12 in conference play with two games left on the regular season at Crestline on Tuesday and at Western Reserve on Thursday.
On Saturday, the JV and Varsity boys basketball teams hosted Crestview in a big Firelands conference matchup as the Big Red went into the game holding a one game lead in the conference standings. The JV team got the night started on a good night as they jumped out to a big early lead and would cruise to a victory avenging a loss earlier in the season to the Cougars. The varsity game, played in front of a large crowd and tournament atmosphere, was all the fans could hope for in what was a back and forth game that went right down to the final buzzer. Crestview would jump out to an early lead and a lead that they would hold onto for most of the game. They led by scores of 14-9 after 1 and 27-20 at the half before extending that lead out to as much as 13 points early in the 3rd quarter before the Big Red would start to chip away. The Big Red would go on a big run late in the 3rd quarter to cut the deficit to 37-32 after 3 and would find themselves down 3 with under 2 minutes to play when a loose ball scuffle ended with the Big Red in possession and a break away layup and an and one opportunity that tied the game at 45 with 1:32 remaining in the game. The Cougars and Big Red would then each trade turnovers as both teams tried to hold for the last shot giving the Cougars the final possession of the game and they would take full advantage with a banked in foul line jump shot as the buzzer sounded to take the win 47-45. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Big Red after battling back from behind all game as they drop to 13-6 overall and 9-3 in the conference and are now tied for first place in the conference. They will have a full week to regroup before traveling to St. Paul on Friday night.
