Big Red Weekend Recap: It was a busy weekend of athletic events as many of our Big Red teams were in action before the snowstorm. The JV and Varsity boys basketball teams got the weekend started on Friday night as they traveled to Mapleton and got the weekend started with two wins over the Mounties. After a slow start to the game and trailing 16-14 after one quarter the Big Red going and slowly pulled away throughout the game en route to the 75-52 win over the Mounties. Both teams were then right back in action on Saturday night at Lucas in non-conference play and ran away to blowout wins over the Cubs. The varsity would use another big 2nd half to run away to the 58-31 win as the wins improve them to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play. The game that was originally rescheduled for tonight at Western Reserve has again been cancelled due to weather. The Big Red will be back in action on Friday at home against Monroeville. On Saturday, the MS girls basketball team took on Western Reserve in the 1st round of the conference tournament and lost a tough game to the Roughriders by a score of 39-26 as their season came to an end. We are proud of the MS Lady Big Red for their hard work and improvement shown this season! The Varsity girls basketball team hosted Monroeville on Saturday afternoon in a varsity only contest and had a rough day in a 42-27 loss to the Eagles. They drop to 2-14 overall on the season and 1-9 in conference play. They are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday at Lucas. The Varsity wrestling team was in action at the Garaway Peg Leg Scuffle on Saturday and had another solid showing. Thomas Winegardner once again led the way with a 1st place finish in his weight class making it his 3rd championship showing in a row. Levi Foley and Isaiah Miller both added 4th place finishes while Ben Trimmer and Parker Miller both took 5th place on the day. They will be back in action next weekend at Akron Hoban. The MS wrestling team competed hard at the Mapleton Smokerise Invite and will wrap their season on Friday this week at the conference meet at New London. Also on Saturday, our Big Red cheerleaders competed in a state cheer competition in Columbus and earned a 7th place finish in their division! Congratulations to our cheerleaders on a great showing. Big Red Recap:

It was a busy night of basketball at PHS and SMS on Thursday as the MS boys basketball teams and the JV and Varsity girls were all in action at home. The MS boys hosted Crestview and once again came away with a split with the Cougars as the 7th grade cruised to a 45-14 win while the 8th grade lost by a 62-43 final score. Both teams will be back in action next Tuesday at Western Reserve to wrap up the regular season before starting tournament play next weekend.

The JV and Varsity girls hosted Wynford in non-conference action and both lost to the Royals but not before the varsity came out with upset on their mind and really battled the Royals during the 1st half in a game that was closer than the final score indicated. The Lady Big Red played the Royals neck and neck during a back and forth 1st quarter that included a buzzer-beating 3 pointer to bring the game to a 12-12 tie at the end of the quarter. The Royals gained a small edge in the 2nd quarter but the Big Red stayed in the game and went into halftime down by only 5 points with the score at 28-23. The Royals got some momentum going in the 2nd half while the Big Red struggled to keep up offensively but continued to battle defensively as the Royals slowly pulled away en route to the 60-28 win over the Big Red. The loss drops the Big Red to 2-13 overall and they will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon hosting Monroeville.

Big Red Recap:

The JV and Varsity boys basketball teams were in action on Tuesday night at home hosting Wynford in non-conference play. The JV started the night off with a tough 3 point loss to the Royals before the Varsity looked to push their winning streak to 6 games and keep the positive momentum going. It wasn't easy for the Big Red as the Royals came in with an upset on their mind and would not go away all night. The Big Red pushed their lead to 13 points at one point during the 2nd quarter but could not pull further ahead as the Royals made enough plays and shots to stay in the game. The Big Red would take a 7 point lead into the 4th quarter but the Royals would cut the deficit to as close as two points late in the game before the Big Red sealed the game away with foul shots down the stretch and picked up the 59-52 non-league win. They improve to 10-2 overall on the season and they will be back in action on Friday at Mapleton.

The MS girls basketball teams were also in action as they traveled to Crestview and played two full games against the Cougars in their final games of the regular season before the tournament begins this weekend. They ended the season on a high note as both the 7th and 8th grade teams picked up wins over the Cougars. They will head into firelands conference tournament play on Saturday this weekend at Mapleton.

Athletic News! Big Red Weekend Recap: It was another busy winter sports weekend for the Big Red as every one of our winter teams was in action over the weekend. It started on Friday night as the Lady Big Red basketball teams hosted Mapleton in Friday night conference play and it was a rough night for the Big Red as they dropped both games to the Mounties. The JV played a 2 quarter game and lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer as the Mounties hit a shot as time expired to take the win. The varsity played the high-powered Mounties shorthanded due to injuries and struggled offensively all night and could not keep up with the Mounties as they fell by a 54-14 final score. They drop to 2-12 overall and 1-8 in conference play and will be back in action on Thursday this week hosting Wynford. On Saturday morning the MS basketball teams took on St. Paul as the girls hosted the Flyers in one combined game while the boys teams traveled to St. Paul. The girls lost a tough game at home by a score of 32-29. They are scheduled to be back in action on Tuesday at Crestview. The 7th and 8th grade boys both lost to the Flyers as the 7th grade lost 38-27 while the 8th grade fell 44-35. They will be back in action on Wednesday hosting Mapleton in games rescheduled from last week. The MS wrestling team competed in New London's Randy Harner Invite on Saturday and was shorthanded due to injuries and illness but the few that competed wrestled hard and were led by Jayce Rodgers' 3rd place finish. They will be back in action on Saturday this weekend at Mapleton's Smokerise Invite. The Varsity wrestling team was also in action as they competed in the Mapleton Dave Rohr Invite and had a strong day finishing in 7th place out of 16 teams. Thomas Winegardner led the way with a 1st place finish in his 120 pound weight class and was also named the tournaments Most Valuable Wrestler! Ben Trimmer followed with a 2nd place finish, while Levi Foley and Isaiah Miller both took 3rd and Parker Miller took 4th. They will be back in action on Saturday this weekend at Sugarcreek Garaway. Then on Saturday night, the Big Red boys basketball teams returned to action hosting South Central in a conference tripleheader. It was a busy night as the Big Red cheerleaders hosted mini cheer night while we also celebrated Military Appreciation Night and recognized the officials on Officials Appreciation Week. The freshman got the night started with a win over the Trojans before the Trojans bounced back in the JV game and took the win. The Varsity game was much different then the first go around between the two teams that saw both teams gain large leads and go on big runs with a lot of offense and high scoring. This time around it was defense and rebounding that both teams leaned all night that kept the game close throughout the contest. The Trojans would hold small leads throughout the first half as the game stayed close before the Big Red went on a small run at the end of the half to take a 31-30 lead into the half. The 3rd quarter was all defense as the Trojans would take the lead back early in the quarter and would hold the Big Red scoreless for over 6 minutes into the quarter. The Big Red would then end the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 41-36 lead into the 4th quarter and ended up holding the Trojans to 6 points in the quarter. The 4th quarter was much of the same as the offenses picked up a bit but every basket was a big one as the lead would never get to more than two possessions as the Big Red would eventually seal the win by a 53-48 final score. The win improves the Big Red to 9-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play. They will be back in action on Tuesday hosting Wynford in non-conference play.
