Athletic News! Big Red Weekend Recap: It was a busy weekend for our winter sports teams that are still in action as the winter season heads into full postseason mode. It started on Friday night as the boys basketball teams hosted Western Reserve in the regular season finale and celebrated our four Big Red basketball seniors. Unfortunately, it was an all around rough night for the Big Red on the hardwood as the JV lost their final game of the season before the Roughriders completed the season sweep of the Big Red in the varsity game. The Big Red coming into the game needed a win and a Monroeville loss to grab a share of the conference championship. Those hopes were dashed as Western Reserve took control of the game early and continued to make things difficult for the Big Red all game as the Roughriders ran away to a 71-35 win in the regular season finale for both teams. The Big Red finish the season at 14-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play and will look to regroup before opening up tournament play on Thursday this week at home against Mansfield St. Pete's in the sectional finals. Also on Friday night our Big Red competition cheer squad traveled to Dublin to compete in the OASSA state competition and came away with a 9th place finish in their division. We are proud of our cheerleaders for their hard work and accomplishments in cheer competitions this winter. On Saturday, our Big Red wrestlers traveled to Crestview for the conference championship meet and finished in 6th place as a team. Leading the way for the Big Red was senior Ben Trimmer as he brought home a conference championship in his weight class. Levi Foley and Isaiah Miller both added 2nd place finishes while Thomas Winegardner added a 3rd place finish. Lucas Distl and Xavier Beveridge both added points for the Big Red with 4th place finishes. They will be back in action on Saturday this weekend in the sectional tournament right here at PHS.

Tri-County Spelling Bee Crowns 2026 Champion

Mansfield, OH (February 23, 2026) – Eighth‑grader Macey King of Plymouth‑Shiloh Local Schools clinched the title of champion of the Tri‑County Spelling Bee on February 19, 2026. The bee, held at Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center, and sponsored by the Mansfield News Journal lasted for 16 tense rounds.

King sealed the victory by correctly spelling the championship word “disproportionate.” Seventh‑grader Isaac Hohman of Ontario Middle School finished as runner‑up.

Tri-County Champion: Macey King, 8th Grade, Plymouth-Shiloh

Tri-County Runner-up: Isaac Hohman, 7th Grade, Ontario

The bee brought together top student spellers from 15 school districts across Morrow, Richland and Crawford counties. The event drew families, teachers and community members to cheer the contestants on.

Coordinator Colleen Haynes said the bee offered more than a trophy. “Spelling bees build confidence, improve vocabulary and teach students to stay calm under pressure.” Participants also gain public speaking experience and a stronger appreciation for language — benefits that extend well beyond the competition. Society regularly recognizes talented athletes for their skills. I am proud that Mid-Ohio gives students the opportunity to showcase academic and artistic talents too, by hosting events such as the spelling bees, academic challenge competitions and Artapoloosa.”

Way to go Macey!!!

SMS News! Out of 25 talented spellers representing Richland, Crawford, and Morrow Counties, Macey King rose to the top at the Tri-County Spelling Bee. After an impressive 12  intense rounds, she was the last one standing — claiming victory by correctly spelling disproportionate! Her hard work, determination, and composure under pressure truly paid off. This is a remarkable achievement, and we couldn’t be more proud. 🤩

THANK YOU!
Over the last 2 weeks the National Honor Society hosted a 50/50 change drive in the High School. Between all the classes in the high school and an anonymous donation we are able to donate $400 to the Ronald McDonald House in Columbus. The winning class was Mr. Silcox’s 2nd Period Class. Special thank you to Landen Laser and his family who donated over $175 in change. Over the last 2 years the NHS has been able to donate $900 to the Ronald McDonald House. Thank you to everyone who donated and for making an impact on all who use the Ronald McDonald House Resources. GBR!

Big Red Recap:

The girls basketball team traveled to Crestline on Wednesday for a sectional tournament matchup with the Bulldogs. It was a low scoring defensive battle the entire first half as the Lady Big Red trailed 3-2 after the 1st quarter and 7-5 at the half. Unfortunately for the Big Red, they continued to struggle offensively while Crestline got their offense going enough to pull away for a 37-14 win over the Lady Big Red. Their season comes to an end with a 3-20 overall record. We are proud of the girls for the fight and hard work they showed throughout the season!

Big Red Recap:

The JV and Varsity boys basketball teams hosted Crestline on Tuesday night in non-conference play and came away with a sweep over the Bulldogs. The JV team cruised to a victory before the varsity needed a big 3rd quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs. The Big Red would hold small leads at the end of the 1st quarter and at halftime before using a full court press defense to speed the game up in the 3rd quarter that would lead to fastbreak points in bunches as they extended the lead to double digits and cruised to a 73-61 win over the Bulldogs. With the win they improve to 14-7 overall on the season and will be back at home on Friday night for the regular season finale with Western Reserve.
