Big Red Weekend Recap:
It was a busy weekend for the Big Red even with the snow making it's impact and cancelling the JV and Varsity boys basketball games on Saturday night. The weekend got started on Friday night as the Big Red boys basketball teams traveled to South Central for a triple header including the freshman game and came away with a sweep of the Trojans. The freshman and JV both got the night started with nice wins over the Trojans before the Varsity game was a tail of two halves with the Big Red getting the better end in a big way. South Central came out firing on all cylinders and ran out to a 25-13 lead after the end of the 1st quarter and would continue to lead 44-36 at the half. The 2nd half was all Big Red in a big way as the Big Red would outscore the Trojans 24-5 in the 3rd quarter to take the lead 60-49 after 3 quarters and would continue the onslaught in the 4th quarter running away to a 88-56 win over the Trojans. The win improves them to 3-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The JV and Varsity will be back in action on Thursday at home against Mapleton.
On Saturday, the MS basketball teams took on St. Paul with the girls traveling to St. Paul for one combined game and the boys hosting the Flyers. The girls picked up a nice road win by a score of 42-36. They will be back in action on Tuesday hosting Crestview in two full games. The 7th and 8th grade boys both lost tough games to the Flyers with the 7th grade losing 31-25 and the 8th grade losing 40-33. They will also be back in action on Tuesday hosting New London.
The JV and Varsity girls traveled to Monroeville to continue league play against the Eagles. The JV played a 2 quarter game and lost a tough game before the Varsity once again jumped out to an early lead and led for the entire 1st half before losing the lead in the 2nd half. They led 23-19 at the half but would struggle during the 2nd half as the Eagles grabbed the lead early in the 3rd quarter and would not give it back as the Lady Big Red would fall by a 49-39 final score. They drop to 0-6 overall on the season and 0-3 in league play and will be back in action on Tuesday at Mansfield Christian.
The Big Red Wrestling team opened up their season and competed at the Clearfork Invite on Saturday. The wrestlers placed 8th out of 16 teams and placed 5 out of 9 guys. It was a good performance, especially having 5 weight classes with no one competing. Placing were Ben Trimmer 2nd at 144, Isaiah Miller 3rd at 175, Levi Foley 4th at 106, Thomas Winegardner 5th at 120, and Cortez Hernandez 6th at 138. The Big Red will be back in action Friday at the Mohawk duals.

The JV and Varsity girls were also in action at home hosting Hillsdale in non-conference action and both lost to the Falcons. The varsity came out ready to play and jumped out to an early lead and would hold a 9-8 advantage at the end of the 1st quarter. The Falcon defense would stifle the Lady Big Red during the 2nd quarter holding them to only one point in the quarter as the Big Red would trail 18-10 at the half. The 2nd half was more of the same as the Lady Big Red tried to play catch up but could not sustain any consistent offense en route to the 43-25 loss to the Falcons. The Lady Big Red drop to 0-4 on the season and will travel to Mapleton on Thursday night.
The JV and Varsity boys were also in action as they took to the road to open up conference play at Monroeville and after a rough JV loss the Eagles and Big Red treated the fans to an exciting conference opening game. Monroeville, playing their first game of the season came out firing on all cylinders as they raced out to a 24-11 lead after the 1st quarter. The 3rd quarter was back and forth with the Eagles continuing to hang onto the lead holding a 59-53 advantage going into the 4th quarter.
